Guest Speakers: Bruce Pollerd and Barry Joyce. 'Coast Watch Rescue Service."
The service has been in operation for 42 years. It started when Barwon Heads was a small fishing port. All members are volunteers, 15 are active members from a total of 40. The organization is self funded but since an enquiry into safety some Government assistance is to be forthcoming. Their area of operation is from Point Lonsdale to Torquay. They work in close association with the water police who use GPS to track those in trouble. There have been 2 call outs this year compared with 17 to this time last year. A Gemini inflatable boat, which is powerful, able to cope with rough weather, shallow water and fast is used.
Fund raising through BBQ's at Bunnings provides finance for some equipment. Because of the results of the enquiry a new tow vehicle, an infra-red camera and personal location beacons as well as running costs and attendance at courses is now funded. The service is expecting a great increase in activity in the next 10 years because of the population development in our area.
Professional training will be taken up with the water police and a coxswain's course will be available soon. Emergency Management Victoria now controls the service with continuation of water police involvement.
The speakers demonstrated great enthusiasm for the service they provide to the community and our community is fortunate to be in the care of the Coast Watch Marine Service.
Thank you,
AG.
