Gavin Nelson and Darryl Dinnett from
the Ocean Grove Primary School
Our speakers, from Ocean Grove Primary School, presented a fast moving and lively explanation of the Naplan project currently being used in Primary Schools. It is used to assist in planning for future programs and to provide feedback to teachers and students at the level of grade 3, grade 5 and grade 7. Results can demonstrate if teaching strategies need altering to assist the students in their learning.
It is not a content test. Naplan is primarily a comprehension, problem solving and understanding test. Both speakers emphasized how important it is to ensure children and their parents have any misconceptions corrected and that it is not used to grade the performance of students or the school.
Students are encouraged to try hard and to celebrate a love of reading of all types of genres. The tool is divided into four parts: Language, Conventions, Writing and Reading and Numeracy. Specific area of grammar and punctuation are also assessed. The test has strict guidelines for use and an explanation was given what these were. There is an opportunity for students to practice tests. Gavin and Darryl showed they were enthusiastic about the program, as they believed that it would help students to learn better and enjoy their schooling more.
Members present were given three questions to answer from the test. I am pleased that results were good all cases once the initial suspicion that there were no trick questions. The questions were at grade 3 standard so it was a relief that we did well.

Thank you,
AG.
