Speaker: Lindon Galea. “Eat Up”.
The aim of this program is to
make sure children have lunch at school. Lindon discovered there were children
at two schools in Shepparton who were not having food at lunchtime every day
Research showed that there were many children in a similar situation. A
solution was needed. With the help of the community through a share food
program/outlet, SPC, a Bank and a bread shop a very basic sandwich meal was
developed. The scheme grew and the program and activity was moved into a Tafe
School where apprentice chefs helped to prepare the sandwiches that were
distributed by the teachers. This model has been implemented in more than140 schools
in Bendigo, Ballarat, Melbourne and other networks where Rotary is involved.
Each preparation session makes 600 – 700 sandwiches and apart from this labour
delivery, storage and developing schools to take ownership of the program
model.
Funding is derived from
various sources and organizations and students from private schools provide a
fair amount of labour. However some fundraising is necessary even though Food
Bank and the State Government is involved.
Food safety and handling passes current health
regulations and school canteens are generally supportive.
Lindon announced that the
program would be introduced into Geelong this week, and he is hoping to expand
further where able and the model is needed.
Thank you,
AG.

John Calnin
asked that this item be included.
“I have been on the Committee of the Ocean Grove
Neighbourhood Centre for the past 13 years and would like to stand down. Before
me Tony Haines was there for a similar amount of years. Rotary has always had
good relations with the Centre and it would be nice if I could have a
replacement (from Rotary). The Director is Nicki Dunne and the current
President is Anne Geerings. The Centre is very well run. The commitment is once
a month meeting at 6pm to 8pm on the 3rd Monday of the month. You
have a meal at the centre prior to the meeting. Matters arising through the
month are handled by email.”
If someone is interested please see John Calnin who
would be delighted to provide a nomination prior to the AGM in October.
