July Theme: 'Literacy on Health'
Health C'tee: Peter Hawthorne, Wal Kelly, Vic Harnath and John Dodgshun
Rotary in Australia has a number of special health programs that are supported along with our contributions to Rotary Foundation for Polio and other projects. A brief outline of the Australian programs is included in this week's bulletin to conclude our "Literacy on Health" theme for July.

ARHF provides financial support to a number of projects that enhance the health of our community. They are celebrating 30 years of service with a ball at Moonee Valley on Saturday August 13th. Vic has sent out details.
Spend a few minutes to have a look at their website, or read your next copy of 'Rotary Downunder'. One of the ARHF projects has been…….
Bowellscan. (I will not delve into the infinite world of puns that this topic lends itself to…..I can be strong, sometimes)
Bowellscan is a program that runs through the month of May. People buy their kits from the local chemist and complete the challenges presented. Completed samples are are returned to the chemist, collected by Rotary representatives, and taken to a District assessment laboratory. Participants are notified if they should have follow up or if their samples were 'clear'. It has proved to be immensely successful in helping detect early signs of bowel cancer.

July 26th The Meeting….
President Marg announced that Board had decided not hold a regular meeting on Melbourne Cup night (Nov 1st) as everyone would have been busy with the Art Show and Market. Any involvement at these activities will count as 'make-ups'.
John Fox is organizing the supplies for the weekly raffle and they will include quality wines and at least one 'non alcoholic prize'. The roster each week will 'volunteer' a member to run the raffle (raffle books, etc are in the cupboard) and are invited to 'excite' an interest in participating!
International. Geoff Brentnall took a carload of 'overflow' stock from ST Vincent de Paul to Donations in Kind. DIK are having difficulties in getting containers into Fiji but have managed to divert some materials into Vanuatu. OG Primary School has more books ready to go to DIK.
The Rotary Foundation (Trevor McArdle). While there is significant progress in meeting the challenge of raising $200m there is still a shortfall of $26m to be raised this Rotary year.
Unfortunately, there have been outbreaks of 'wild polio' in India and Nigeria. A new strain of the sabin vaccine is meeting the challenge.
Treasurer Fred is not happy! Too many are still to pay their dues!!! Please make him happy as soon as possible.
Art Show. Coral has reported that there will be an Art Show feature in 'the Voice'. She thanked John and Nan Calnin for coming onto the committee to help out.
Conference 2012. It looks as though we will need 20 rooms. Rod G will book at the Old Maritime Motor Inn, which is opposite Flagstaff Hill. Please get your $50 deposits to Rod G asap.
FROG's are meeting next Wednesday. Let Noel know if you are going. It is important to keep this on the 'go'.
Jan Flett had several of our partners and rotary ladies at a 'Scarf Afternoon'. All very enjoyable from what I've been told.
John Paton's fines saw the best fine of the night going to Ingrid and Geoffrey Cummings for unsuccessfully trying to balance and operate their washing machine on a box!
Our meal. It was worth seeing the collective raised eyebrows, breathing in, and pauses as our "lamb shanks' were served. The empty plates and clean bones were testament to the meal's quality!
Guest Speaker. Nigel Lane: 'Face Book Friend or Foe'!
Nigel is the Chaplain for Christian College and comes into contact with all the issues confronted by social networking amongst teenagers. His talk was most enlightening as he, in understandable terms, outlined 'tweets', 'twitters' and 'flickers', Facebook and tags.
The incredible growth in the new communication mediums, their challenges (risks) and benefits were easily understood. Nigel completed his talk by outlining some of the strategies that could be used to help manage the use of these new social networks amongst users.
Trivia
I used to enjoy watching Dean Martin years ago. He had a bundle of one liners and short songs. Here's a couple that stuck for obvious reasons…..
'I feel sorry for the teetotaler as, when they wake up in the morning, that's the best they will feel all day!'
'If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt'.
'I once shook hands with Pat Boone and my whole right side sobered up.'
'The girl that I marry must be a nympho with a distillery.'
