The Rotary Club of Ocean Grove, the CFA and Barwon Coast combined forces last weekend to clear some unwelcome weeds from the sand dunes behind Main Beach. Although the area is generally well covered with native species, in some places these struggle to compete with pests such as Polygala (Bellarine Pea) and Dolichos Vine.
The Rotary Club organized the activity which resulted in the removal and destruction of several cubic metres of noxious plants from an area of about 5 acres. Assistance in identifying the intruders was provided by Ben Mills and Brett Williamson from Barwon Coast. The CFA supervised the burning of the weeds and also provided a free lunch to all participants.
The Rotary Club intends to schedule similar activities in October and November and will again invite members of the public to become involved. Club President Timothy Kemp is committed to the task of demonstrating that Rotary is a “hands on” organization that exists to serve the community from which its membership is drawn.
