ROTARY CELEBRATES 100 YEARS
Rotary, the world’s leading service organization, commenced on 23rd February 1905, and is now represented by more than 1,220,000 Rotarians in almost 32000 clubs, spread over 166 countries.
Rotary came to Ocean Grove in 1983 and the club now has a membership of 53, and growing. It is one of 13 Rotary Clubs on the Bellarine Peninsular, and is active in all avenues of traditional Rotary service.
Rotary Clubs throughout the world meet weekly, generally over a meal, and our club meets at 6.00pm for a dinner commencing at 6.30pm in the Ocean Grove Hotel. Meeting formalities are generally followed by a guest speaker, and most meetings conclude at 8.00pm.
Examples of community service undertaken by the club include the running of the monthly craft and produce market on Kingston Park and the staging of a Xmas dinner for elderly citizens. Many local schools, sporting and other community entities have been supported by the club in our 21 years of service to the community. Total expenditure on International, Community, Youth and Vocational projects has exceeded $500,000.
Assistance to and encouragement of apprentices, emerging businesses and youth organizations have been a continuing activity and the Club has been a strong supporter of the Rotary Foundation.
This is the ‘Flagship’ project of Rotary International, and was founded in 1917, although major spending programmes did not commence until 1936. In the 68 years since then, almost $2 billion US has been raised and spent on a great variety of programmes, and all of the contributions have been directed to these programmes. Administration costs are met by investing annual raisings for three years prior to expenditure, and the interest pays the cost of administration.
Current programmes include Scholarships, [almost 35000 awarded since 1947] Group Study Exchange, [10000 teams since 1965], the Health, Hunger and Humanity Programme, [$100M since 1978], matching grants for International Humanitarian programmes, Grants for Rotary Volunteers and the biggest of them all – The Polio Plus Programme [more than US$500M in contributions by Rotarians since 1985]
