Reports
Helen Trigg: Helen has enjoyed a lovely trip to Townsville to see her beautiful new granddaughter.
Youth Service, David Tyrrell – Matt Walker enjoyed the seminar at Kangaroobie and Cobden Railway. The Cobden Railway is a credit to the local Rotary Club and well worth a visit.
Signe will give a presentation to the club on April 26th. This is a partners night and all members are encouraged to attend. The last opportunities are approaching to invite Signe to dinner as she is only here until June 27th.
Market, Tony Haines: In handing over the Market coordinator’s role, Tony has prepared a ‘handbook’ of notes and introduced seven sub-committees, each with a leader and a deputy. This will make the tasks more appealing and flexible. Please see Tony if there are particular areas of interest for you before jobs are allocated.
Rotary Club of Corio Glittering Hollywood Theme Night: Terry Ayrton spoke to the club about this night and invites members to come along. Three course meal, dancing, live music, silent auction – dress to impress Hollywood style! $50 per ticket.
From the Floor: Wal Kelly suggests a CPR Night. Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation can be learnt by anyone and can save lives. If approved by the board, we would need 20 members to indicate their interest in this non-certificate course. He has received A GOOD RESPONSE so far but a few more are required.
Martin Geerings announced that the Neighborhood Centre is selling the Entertainment Books this year for $50. These are excellent value with many discounts throughout the year PLUS a great way to support the center.
John Webb reports that Keith Fagg is running in the Marathon and sends a text message to say that he is currently in 10,934th place in a field of about 30,000!
A letter has been received from Red Cross expressing thanks to the Rotary Club. The club collected $3,500 of a total $5,900 for the town!
Upcoming Debate: A club debate will take place on May 10, 2005. The topic of the debate is as follows:
“The amalgamation of local councils to form the council of the City of Greater Geelong has resulted in improved services to Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads.”
Vocational Service members will speak for the affirmative, while Community Service members will speak for the negative.
Vince Ross, CEO Narana Creations. The members greatly appreciated Vince’s entertaining and thoughtful address. Employed through the indigenous arm of the Uniting Church, Vince is CEO of Narana Creations. “Narana is about community development…it is a cultural centre for all people… it is educational” says Vince. “I believe in empowering, in self determination and self control”. Narana means to listen, hear and understand. With three Tourism awards, and a ‘buzzing’ atmosphere, Narana offers something for all, even the minister for Aboriginal Affairs, who discovered something of ‘the circle of learning’ and may have, for a moment at least, been carried away from ‘outcomes, objectives and budget targets’ as he watched his boomerang spiral round and land beside him.
