Fund-raising; we need a gimmick
Our major fund–raising projects remain pretty much the same every year. The Sunday craft and produce market must be more than 20 years old, and the progressive dinner/auction won’t work every year, and is not enthusiastically supported by our members. The car raffle may well become our biggest net fund raiser this year, but that is very nearly a one-man show, and that is not healthy for a club of 46 members. Frankly, and without any reflection on hard-working organisers, it is high time for new ideas.
RC Mount Isa runs a hugely successful annual rodeo, and Alice Springs, the unique ‘Henley on the Todd’. Both events are virtually unopposed, unlike our market. RC Deloraine in Tassie ran an Arts and Crafts show which raised more than $500,000 in 13 years to 1994 because they made it so big that opposing it was pointless. RC Balmain won a significant achievement award in 1975 for raffling a Rolls Royce, raising $48,418 for local hospitals. So what was so special about that? Just another car raffle? Not with a RR, mate!
So, how about some fresh ideas? I will print them, and there will be prizes.

Rotary International Programs and the Rotary Foundation
Some, [if not most] Rotarians find it difficult to differentiate between these two terms. It can be said that the first is all-embracing, and includes the second, but that is too wide a definition. Let us look first at RI programs:
RI’s programs and service opportunities are designed to help Rotarians meet needs in their own communities and reach out to assist people in need worldwide. There are ten main categories and they will be dealt with over the next two issues of this bulletin.
The Rotary Foundation of RI is a not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to support the efforts of Rotary International in the fulfilment of the Object of Rotary, Rotary’s mission, and the achievement of world understanding and peace through local, national and international humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs. There are also ten main programmes, and they will be summarised in issues 3 and 4 following this bulletin.

OG vs. Queenscliffe at Queenscliff. Info. provided by our sports reporter, Alison George.
Not a huge turn-up, by all reports. 20 of our mob, [plus 2 guests], and 8 of them. Lighthearted social bowls and a meal which was one story higher than is our custom. The Spanish fleet hove into sight off the South coast, and then heaved off, apparently deciding that the meagre local turnout didn’t warrant a single cannon ball!
Greetings to Brazil, Canada, England and France
Jan Howard, Keith Nixon [of Southampton] and Robin Stevens, [of Yorkshire and Normandy], are all E-mail recipients of this bulletin. Now then, how about a bit of local news? Anything will do, long or short, controversial or mundane, even the local weather. I would love to hear from you.
