We are delighted to welcome fellow Rotarians District Governor Chris Sims and his wife Christine. What better occasion to induct a new member Mick Cummins and welcome his wife Barbara into our midst! We hope Chris and Christine Sims - and all our guests - have a most enjoyable evening and look forward to hearing from the DG about Rotary’s wider activities within District 9780 and beyond.
Good to see so many members picking Market pamphlet-drop areas - there are always windows-of-opportunity for ‘service through Rotary’ in a busy club!

Note there will be two guest-speakers next week (8 September); Former Exchange Student Matt Gerber and Sam Meagher - Bill and Joan Steains’ daughter. Sam, whose daughter Stella suffers from epilepsy, is running in the 20 September Berlin Marathon to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation (for more info click on www.everydayhero.com.au/berlin ).
The Rotary Story And How We Are Shaping It:
The more we know about what is happening within the Ocean Grove Rotary Club the more effective we are as Rotarians, locally and beyond. In the first issue for each month there is space, one at a time, for the Service Projects Committees to communicate their aims, purposes, tasks and outcomes more expansively than is possible at weekly dinner-meetings. Phil Edwards set the ball rolling with an excellent ‘market report’ for August. Judy Greer follows for September with an equally interesting and informative ‘Youth Service’ contribution. In October (on the 6th) John Eyles will expand on ‘Vocational Service’.
SEPTEMBER – ‘NEW GENERATIONS MONTH’ – Judy Greer, Chair Youth Services
Did you know?--- If you take some time out and look at www.rotary.org and click on Students and Youth, you will find out all you need to know about the many and varied Rotary programs available for Youth or New Generations including Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth Exchange,
Rotary World Peace Fellowships and Ambassadorial Scholarships to name a few. It is these sorts of programs that can ultimately bring ‘new blood’ into Rotary Clubs.
And did you know?----It was in 1959 that some Australian Rotarians organised a youth festival and now fifty years later the program which developed out of this event continues to be a well recognised Rotary Youth Program. We all know it as RYLA or Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. Our most recent participant was Sarah Goette – who attended a RYLA Program in April.
Currently we are seeking to sponsor three Year 9 students interested in the 3 day Siemens Science Experience, available at a variety of universities and tertiary institutions and with a range of dates. All local secondary schools have received the information kits.
Eaglehawk’s Orphan Students Exchange Program – January 2010: Have you considered offering to be a home host/hostess for the four students from two Thai orphanages for whom we are planning to provide a beach holiday about the second last week of the January 2010 holidays? These Year 9/10 students, being tested by the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk, are attending schools in Bendigo. If you and your family would like to be a home host you will be required to have a ‘Working With Children Check for volunteer work (at no cost!). See Judy Greer for forms
