From President Rod:
Congratulations to everyone for helping to make our last meeting so successful. I hope you got as much of a feeling of pride in being a member of Rotary – and of Ocean Grove in particular - as I did
It was great to have as our guests two inspirational speakers in Matt Gerber (Youth Exchange ‘97/98) and Sam Meagher (Epilepsy Foundation and the Berlin Marathon). Good luck to both of them in their future ambitions. We look forward to hearing more about their achievements.
‘The Great Australian Bike Ride’ is coming to Geelong on Friday 9th October. There will be an official welcome by the Mayor of Greater Geelong. Three Rotary International Directors will be present. I will be away in Western Australia at the time and hope our Club will be represented. For further details check out the Website www.greataustralianbikeride.org.au
‘The Rotary Club of Ararat’ will be celebrating its 80th Birthday on 31st October next. Ararat is one of the oldest Rotary Clubs in Australia (It was chartered in Rotary’s first ten years in this country).
‘Bushfire Relief’. To receive $1000 from the Rotary Club of Southampton, Ontario Canada was fantastic.
‘Community Service - in Australia and Beyond’: We have provided $750 toward the training of three ‘Bellarine Community Health’ Counsellors (for over-25s support); $150 for Kerang Rotary’s Community Forum for Drought Relief; donated $300 to the Epilepsy Foundation; confirmed our commitment ($500 plus depending on other clubs) to a joint Matching Grants Project for Bio-sands water filters in Kasanga village Zambia.
10th September: ‘Bellarine Secondary College’s Youthfest’. We are committed to a Shelter Box Display.

The Rotary Story And How We Shape It:
August was Rotary’s Membership and Extension Month. We look forward to hearing from President-Elect Noel the results of our recent membership survey. Rotary’s present is in our hands – its future in the hands of people yet to join. Rotary Clubs go out of business not because their work is done but because they cannot maintain a viable membership. The District Governor ends his September Newsletter on a ‘sombre note’. He had just collected the newly defunct Rotary Club of Boort’s Charter. He says its Rotary Club will be ‘sadly missed by the Boort community’. District Governor Chris finds in many of the towns he visits that their ‘communities enjoy having a Rotary Club contributing to their culture, but they don’t want to join the Club’. Rotary is a movement of committed people. Identifying new Rotarians is the personal responsibility of club members; not the ‘organisation’ – or the wider community.
Forthcoming Guest-Speaker/s (Richard Trigg):
15th September: Brendon Bolton and student - on ‘Stephanie Alexander’ Garden.
(8TH and 15th September are part of Rotary’s;’ New Generations’ theme month)
22nd September: Darryl Thomas CEO Geelong Cemeteries Trust.
29th September: Rotarian David Tyrrell – on his recent sailing trip to Noumea
Duties 22nd September:
Chairman: Geoff Brentnall Assistant Cashier and Thanker: Mick Cummins
Greeter and Assistant Sergeant: Phil Edwards.
(Not always possible of course and there is a small cash float held at the reception table BUT it is a tremendous help when attendees pay the exact amount of $20 per head on arrival.)
(Editorial Team: Ian Downing & Richard Grimmett – Letters to the Editor are welcome. Expletives will be returned)
