The Rotary Story And How We Are Shaping It:
October is Rotary’s Vocational Service Month. The more we know about what is happening in our Club the more effective are we as Rotarians. In this the first Bulletin for October 2009 Rotarian John Eyles, our Vocational Service Chairperson, reflects on the work of his Committee;
Vocational Service - John Eyles
. Rotary Vocational Service aims to encourage and foster;
• High ethical standards in business and professions;
• The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and
• The dignifying by each Rotarian of their occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
Giving effect to these ideals is the shared responsibility of Clubs and individual Rotarians. This year, by awarding ‘Pride of Workmanship Awards’ to a Receptionist a Customer Service Officer; and a Graphic Artist, the Rotary Club of Ocean Grove recognises their personal efforts and the worthiness of their vocations. Their employers welcome the positive reflections the Awards’ on their businesses.
In recognising others’ vocational excellence we are challenged to reflect on our own opportunities for community service through our work. According to Paul Harris; ‘each Rotarian is a connecting link between the idealism of Rotary and their trade or profession’. How then do we better demonstrate high ethical standards in our vocations? How do we foster greater community recognition of the worthiness of ours and others’ vocations?
