Graeme Hawkins talks Bowel Scan
Graham is a retired pharmacist and is most enthusiastic about the Bowel Scan program that commenced in 1987. The first testing was done in Geelong, then the 9780 District, then much of Victoria and recently there has been some national involvement. Of the 30,000 kits distributed last year, 25,000 were returned for testing, with about 1% showing positive results. The pharmacists handle the kits on a pro bono basis. The money taken when kits are purchased helps to pay for advertising that has had very positive results, especially in country areas and now in Gippsland.
Graham suggested that Rotarians should encourage children over the age of 40 to participate, as most grandparents do not want to become full time carers of their grandchildren. EARLY DETECTION RESULTS IN A 90% CURE RATE! The National Government is giving a grant to extend the program but the cost of each kit is about $100. The cost of the kits supplied by Rotary is $10 per kit and there is some surplus that is given to the Rotary Health Foundation for research. The cost of testing is very low and most is done in Geelong. Pathologists are involved if there is any sign of abnormality during the testing procedure.
When Graham asked those in the club who were not using the kits to show their hands, I was most surprised. Perhaps there are some invincible super-people in the club that we did not know about. How about trying this year in June, when the kits will be available. Make Vic’s month, as he is our collector.

- Amazing! You hang something in your wardrobe for a while and it shrinks 2 sizes.
- The trouble with some women is that they get all excited about nothing and then they marry him.
- I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are eating too much, impulse buying, and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That is my idea of a perfect day.
