Guest Speakers: Dr Prasard Cooray, Oncologist and Geoffrey Cummins.
Geoffrey Cummins introduced Dr Prasard who is a specialist oncology consultant at the Eastern Group of hospitals is also a member of the John Logan Foundation. A diagnosis of cancer is very confronting and places tremendous strain on family and friends as well as the patient. Geoffrey was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and with surgery and treatment has made a good recovery. John Logan, a colleague of Geoffrey's was also diagnosed with cancer and died in 2008. John wanted a means to relieve some of the burden of cost of drugs and so the Foundation was formed to assist people diagnosed with Gastro-Intestinal cancer to pay for drugs needed for treatment. Money is raised with the support of the Gift and Homewares Industry. The other major fundraiser is a dinner held at Crown Casino in August each year. Dr Cooray discussed in some detail various Gastro-intestinal cancers indicating most are usually undetected until the disease is quite advanced. There are 20,000 new cases diagnosed each year and 26 die each day. The commonest is bowel cancer then pancreas and stomach. Endoscopy is the precursor to final diagnosis after symptoms require medical help- frequently there are no symptoms directly related to the primary tumor, it is secondary invasion of other organs which cause a person to seek medical attention. Dr Cooray emphasized the importance of investigation of unresolved pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, changes in bowel habits and bleeding from any orifice. Diagnostic screening such as bowel scan is worth doing as many instances of bowel cancer if treated early can be cured.
This was a thought provoking presentation and hopefully many members will not ignore vague messages their bodies are telling them and seek a doctor's opinion in time.

Something light:
- I used to have a fear of hurdles, but I got over it.
- A hole has been found in the nudist camp wall. The police are looking into it.
- Police were called to a day care centre where a three-year old was resisting arrest.
- I used to be addicted to soap, but I am clean now.

- Note to members – Apologies must be in by 11a.m. on MONDAY! Notification later than this is of no use. Co-operation with this would be appreciated.
