Conference Update. From John Calnin.
I have been asked by many will they be able to enjoy the Conference or will they be working.
It is the Committee's intention that every member can attend all the sessions, however during the breaks there may be some allocation of duties.
The Christian College Arts and Sports Centre will make the Conference relatively easy with the workload.
**** It is important the Committee knows well in advance if you are unavailable or even doubtful for the 12th, 13th and 14th of April ASAP as duties will be allocated fairly soon.
**** Please advise by email to me ASAP if you are not available or doubtful.
John Calnin.
Conference Chairman.
Report of the Meeting: 2/10/12.
Pres. Dick introduced his guest and son Sam Clay.
There is a friendship exchange available in South Western Texas in March 2013. A reciprocal exchange is also planned in April. There is one in India as well.
The Rotary Club of Highton is asking the City of Greater Geelong to donate the car parking fees collected on 23/2/2013 to a fundraiser for? Polio Plus. Support is needed from all Clubs in the area.
Notes and reminders:
- The RYLA Camp is scheduled soon. Please let Ann know if you know anyone between 18-21 years who may be suitable. This is an excellent experience, but it is difficult to fill places.
- Geoff Chandler reminded members about the Shine On Awards. He would be pleased to receive nominations any time.
- Social Committee. Marion Walton – The race meeting was cancelled. Another attempt will be made later in October.
You are requested to wear a hat on 30/10/12, as it is Hat Night a fundraiser for Mental Health. $5.00 if a hat is worn, $10.00 if not.
- Pride in Workmanship Award. Please consider likely recipients for this award, e.g. people with whom you have had business dealings who have shown a high level of dedication and have provided a high level of service reflecting pride in the work they do. Gerry Spencer and Geoff Chandler would be pleased to hear of any nominations by 26/10/12
- Art Show. There is only four weeks to go! Entries are coming in well. Raffle tickets are available from Tony Haines if wanted. Noel Emselle seeks drivers of the shuttle bus service during the show. As it is not usually boggy in the area Wal Kelly will not need to put his skills to the test! There are several jobs to be done – Please see Tony Haines.
- Summer Market. This will commence on 7th October at Kingston Park as usual. Members are requested to assist with the collection of the gold coin donation at the gate, as the Shelter Box program is the recipient. There are 58 stalls booked.
- Look Out Reserve. Noel Emselle circulated the roster for the fortnightly clean up. It does not take long and it makes the reserve appear loved!
- The Ballarat South Car Raffle ticket selling activity is upon us again…commencing on Sunday at the market, please put your names on the list where you can be available especially as Ingrid C has broken her foot. Peter McLennan will manage the furniture from Foxy's garage while the Fox is swanning around Tassie.
- The Barwon Heads Fine Music Society is holding its 4th Carnival of Music from 12th to 14th October. Tickets are available exclusively from GPAC, or phone 52251200. The venue is the Barwon Heads Community Hall and the program looks varied and most enjoyable. I have further information if required. (A George.)
- Community Service. John Eyles needs volunteers for Marshals and bag fillers for the swim/bike event on 17th March 2013. This is the Port Arlington Triathlon.
- Peter Hawthorn would be VERY pleased to get the DVD's of "The Last Race" back as soon as possible please. He lent them to members about 6 weeks ago.
****** Please remember to avail yourselves of the tea and coffee provided during the evening, preferably before the guest speaker commences. *****
Guest Speaker: Majella O'Connor from "Ocean Eyes."
Majella came from Shepparton about 25 years ago, and opened the business 4 years ago. It takes 5 years to train as an Optometrist.
The function of Optometrists is to look after eyes as well as prescribe glasses through thorough examination and care of the individual. This has been made much easier since digital imaging became available.
Majella took us through the changes in Optometry since 1980.
- Cataract Surgery is refined and therefore more common.
- Drug therapy has improved.
- Contact lenses are improved and easier to use.
- Multifocal lenses are more available.
- Digital retinal photography is used.
- Automated visual field testing is available as is a scanning procedure showing a 3D view of the retina and optic nerve.
- Lens surgery and treatment has been refined.
- Optometrists now have drug-prescribing rights after further qualification. This has increased the scope and function of service especially in rural areas.
- There is more interaction with general medicine providing a more holistic view of the patient.
Eye examinations reveal:
. Nothing to do
. Focus problems.
. Various disease states
Aging (pertinent to many members of the audience!)
Presbyopia, normal and common
Watery or dry eyes – can be managed.
Pterygia – common especially in those who spend time outdoors. Sometimes requires surgery.
Cataract – Part of aging. Surgery is effective and the only cure.
Glaucoma – disease of the optic nerve. Acute form requires immediate treatment. The chronic form can lead to blindness, therefore early detection is vital.
Macula Degeneration – common but if treated early enough deterioration of vision can be halted.
Majella's Message:
- No one is invincible.
- Eye disease is not rare.
- Have a check up at least 2 yearly.
- If you notice any changes, see an eye practitioner ASAP.
- Note to members – Apologies must be in by 11a.m. on MONDAY! Notification later than this is of no use. Co-operation with this would be appreciated. Phone number 0457 315 900
