Guest Speaker; Aaron Habgood.
While introducing Aaron, Peter Hawthorn declared it was his ambition to make Ocean Grove the Organ Donation capital of Victoria!
Approximately four years ago at age 16, Aaron became dizzy and weak twenty-four hours after playing all sports. He was diagnosed with aortic valve stenosis (narrowing of the opening to the main artery out of the heart). The surgery to correct this was successful but after 24 hours he had a respiratory and cardiac arrest. Defibrillation was not successful and after a second episode in intensive care open chest cardiac massage was attempted for 60 minutes.
Aaron's body accepted ECMO, an external mechanical resuscitation device, but after a series of surgical procedures it was realized he needed a heart transplant. Even though ha was walking and talking his mental state was hazy and loss of muscle was drastic. He became very weak but worked hard to rebuild muscle mass. He and his Mother moved into Ronald McDonald House while his Father managed at home with his siblings. Eventually a donor heart became available and the procedure was successful. Recovery was in isolation with two other recipients, where intensive physiotherapy helped him build up muscle mass. He was home within three months and gradually back to nearly normal activities.
By the end of the Cricket season he was doing well and was able to return to football where he won and continues to win several awards. All this requires constant work and Physio. Now he is a full time fisherman, which is heavy work. He requires a six monthly check-up and minimal medication. Aaron believes he has not "had it hard". He thinks his life is pretty normal. He does a lot of work at the Royal Children's Hospital encouraging patients especially with Physiotherapy. Aaron is very grateful to the community and to be here. He is especially grateful to the donor and his/her family.
He is to present his story at the Conference next year.
