3 0n Me - Gill Morgan
Gill decided to talk about her cousin rather than herself as she had spoken about herself when she joined the Club. Gill had the opportunity to discover more about David Russell whist on a recent trip to Europe this year.
He was born in Scotland in 1911 and immigrated to Australia in 1929. He made his way around the country for the next 8 years, working on cattle stations. He moved to Napier in New Zealand in 1938 and on the declaration of war signed up for service with the New Zealand Army.
He was sent to North Africa where he was captured in 1943 and sent to a POW camp in North East Italy. He escaped to a nearby town, Ponte di Piave where a family sheltered him for 2 years. With the help of this family he helped other POWs to find their over to Yugoslavia.
He was arrested in early 1945 and despite torture and beatings he refused to give any information about his activities or those who aided him. A firing squad shot him on the third day. The German leader said, "He died very bravely". He was buried with honour by the townspeople.
Gill and her niece travelled to Italy to visit his grave and pay their respects.
A meeting was arranged with an interpreter at the Town Hall. There they found a plaque honoring her relative. They met the Mayor who invited them to return for the 75th Anniversary of David Russell's death next year. After visiting his gravesite they returned to town and two people who remembered David Russell and what he did for others and the town. The story eventually became known in London and he was posthumously awarded the George Gross, The equivalent of the Victoria Cross for civilians. His medals are held in a military museum in Waiuru, New Zealand. Gill hopes to visit the museum as soon as possible.
Guest Speaker. Graeme Robin. "The Bigger things in Life…. they don't get much bigger than this."
Graeme spoke about what he considerers the major problem concerning the future of the world.
Children born yesterday could live 124 years, to 2138.
He speculated about the world in 2138 and contrasted this with 124 years ago in 1890.
The world population is increasing very quickly. In 1890 there were 1.6 billion, in 1930 2.25 billion, in 1960 3.0 billion, 2014 7.0 billion – what will the numbers be in 2138? He emphasized that the actual size of the world will not change!
Population growth is inevitable; there are 80 million births every year or 9132 people born every hour.
But do people really want to think about this or the consequences. More people mean more of everything… Pollution, congestion, overcrowding, hunger and poverty
We have a finite planet of which we are the custodians. There is some glimmer of light, some countries are experiencing negative growth in population.
Graeme believes population growth will stop, but how? He finished by posing the question. Do we hide our heads in the sand or do we talk to each other about this? He stated that our conversations should commence with children.
