Guest Speaker:
Tony Thomas, Central Melbourne Sunrise Club member spoke about "Trends in Rotary Membership".
Data on Rotary membership is not readily available however research has unearthed the following,
- Numbers have been steady at 1.2 million worldwide over the last 19 years.
- Numbers have been decreasing in most developed countries except Germany.
- Growth has occurred in India, South Korea, Germany, Taiwan and Brazil.
- Australia and New Zealand membership has fallen 17% and is ageing markedly.
- In 1998 there were 26 members per 10,000 population, now it is 13 per 10,000.
- Germany has a particular culture that is conducive to Rotary membership where younger people for networking use it; it is family orientated and has a high profile in the country.
- The LIONS Club has a membership of 13 million worldwide and has grown by 3.5% in the last 5 years. Its membership is steady in Australia. Lions Clubs exist in China with 23,000 members, but China will not allow Rotary! Lions have a graduated fee structure with significant discounts for partners. They also meet monthly rather than weekly.

Guest Speaker:
Gillian Morgan. "The Invention of the Screwed Propeller."
Gill spoke of the history of her 3rd Great Uncle, Robert Morgan from Dunbar near Edinburgh who invented the propeller used on boats and ships and the problems he had in getting it developed.

Unfortunately I deleted the notes Gill sent me about the rest of her talk so I apologize and will include it next time.

Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays.
Also the Club has to pay for members who have not apologized and not turned up!
Phone number is 0457 315 900. Thank You.

A Reminder… I would be very grateful if a hard copy of reports could be given to me at the meeting… My task would be made easier!

Thanks to Ann Hodgkinson for her notes.
