Guest Speaker: 7/7/2015
Phil Quick spoke about the new Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC), which is replacing the Peter McCallum Hospital.
Phil was born in Lara and is a plumber by trade. He spent 6 months in Antarctica. He is currently project manager for BME which is the air-conditioning company equipping the VCCC. The new hospital is a joint venture between Peter McCallum, Royal Children's Hospital, University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. It is being constructed on the site of the old Dental Hospital. The triangular shaped position will consist of half hospital and half research facility. It will also contain accommodation for country patients. The new hospital will be linked by covered walkways to The Royal Melbourne Hospital where the intensive care beds will be located.
The air conditioning needs to be completely insulated during construction and insulation to prevent any introduction of infection into the building. The equipment comes from Europe. It is anticipated the fit out will be finished by September-October 2015 and will be commissioned by Christmas. They need 28 days of fault free running before it can be commissioned. They will then run it as a working hospital with no patients to validate the processes. The first patients will be admitted in June 2016.
Phil is also the incoming chair of the Rotary District Youth Exchange Committee.
Thanks to Ann Hodgkinson for the notes.
Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays. Also the Club has to pay for members who have not apologized and not turned up! Phone number is 0457 315 900. Thank You.
