Report: Meeting 21/7/2015
Guest Speakers:
The four speakers, Annabelle, Melanie, Keith and Lexie from the Geelong Technical Education Centre (GTEC) are currently doing the VCAL an Alternate year 12 syllabus. Their learning has some classroom activity with a concentration of community involvement and hands on practise. The Curriculum for this group has been designed around "The Ice Fight" and substance abuse in young people. As well as working in the community the students also study a trade. All of our speakers indicated they were happy with their choices and hope they can pursue them successfully in the future.
The students decided they would tackle the "Ice" problem through a one-day student summit attended by 100 students. They were expected to plan and organize the whole event including developing a sponsorship partnership with the Commonwealth Bank. The event was widely publicised through media and channels supported by peers. The organising group divided into groups which reflected their interests, e.g. catering, decoration, merchandising, sound, lighting and diversional activities. There were many guests and speakers involved. The summit was very successful and they earned a point towards their VCAL result.
The students have come up with some initiatives that they hope will make a difference in the community.
These were: - Peer to peer education in schools, designed by students and delivered by students. – Rehabilitation first, gaol second when correction is needed. – Money should be directed towards rehabilitation not advertising. – There should be more youth summits held.
The presentation was refreshing and full of quiet satisfaction that their achievements were so successful. Hopefully there will be worthwhile follow up that will make a difference to the prevalence of this dreadful scourge in our society.
I would like to thank all members present for the warm welcome back to your ranks.
Please note: It is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays.
Also the Club has to pay for members who have not apologized and not turned up!
Phone number is 0457 315 900. Thank You.
