Foundation: - Gordon King reported that Nigeria has passed one year with no new cases of the wild poliovirus, leading towards the goal of a polio free Africa. Rotary has donated $688.5 million to fight polio in Africa including $200 million in Nigeria. Nigeria also reacted quickly to thwart the recent Ebola outbreak within 90 days. It is hoped the WHO will declare Nigeria polio free in September this year. Afghanistan and Pakistan are now the only polio endemic countries.

A nominee for the annual VCE Individual award is expected soon. The Roy Rose awards will continue with two recipients. Report of Meeting: 28/7/2015
Guest Speaker: Gary McPike. General Manager of Barwon Coast Committee of Management. "Coastal Management."
Gary was born and raised in Essendon. In 1980 he moved to Forrest where he ran a timber felling and cartage business. He then set up Health Food shops in Apollo Bay, which he ran for 16 odd years. He is a past Rotarian from Apollo Bay/Otway, and helped found the Apollo Bay Music Festival. In 2002 he became manager of the Apollo By-Kennett River Coast Committee of Management. The Committee was responsible for public open space in that coastal area. Gary was their only paid officer. These committees are set up in recognition of the value of the coastline and are responsible for developing a strategic management plan for their area.
The Barwon Coast Committee covers the coastline from 7W to 42W. His role is defined by State legislation to develop Coastal Management Plans, based on community consultation. It has a turnover of $8-$9 million p.a. but most people do not know that the bulk of this comes from campers, who pay for most of the services provided on public coastal land. Barwon Coast is a Category 1 structure, which means it, comes under close supervision from the State Government. It needs to adhere to Government procedures, policies and auditing processes. Major projects currently involve the redevelopment of the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club and the Dunes Restaurant. Construction is due to start next year. The new coastal management plan will be going out for community consultation in the near future. The Committee is also responsible for the management of the Barwon Heads Football and sporting grounds. Very little funding comes from the COGG for sporting grounds on public land. The committee is supportive of the Barwon Heads to Point Lonsdale walking trail proposal and is involved with a working party established with Regional Development Victoria to investigate this project. A strategic feasibility study will be done in the next 12 months, which will then go out for public consultation.
Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays.
Also the Club has to pay for members who have not apologized and not turned up!
Phone number is 0457 3159 00. Thank You.
