John Calnin then introduced the Art Show. He expressed the hope that all members would support the show more. Two organizations, Riding Develops Abilities and Surfing for the Disabled will be the beneficiaries as usual. Rotary members are being asked to choose a cause to benefit from the proceeds of the show. John mentioned and thanked all the sponsors that included those who advertised in the catalogue, the donors of the prize money for the winning artists and the prizes for the Raffle. He also spoke of the new category that is being introduced this year, that of 'Developing Artist up to 30 years of age'.
John also stressed that the committee has always aimed for quality rather than quantity, and this has resulted in the good reputation the Art Show has in the Community. The opening will be on Friday 30th October and will be in place of the Tuesday meeting. It is hoped that all members and partners will attend the opening.
John then introduced the Patron of the Art Show, - Marion King.
John Calnin - What a great nights
entertainment
Marion outlined the history of the Show that is in its 5th year. A highly qualified judge is always invited to do the judging and after the first year when a 'professional hanger' was employed, Rotarians have undertaken this very important task since then. The numbers of entries varies, between 250 – 400. Each show has been a bit different, with Street Art being trialled for two years, but there were not enough entries to justify continuing. Hopefully the new category being introduced this year will prove more popular.
As part of her role as Patron Marion then addressed the issue of art and culture.
She asked the question, 'so, what is art' or more often, 'why is this supposed to be art?'
These questions are often tinged with exasperation and clearly different standards judged by different rules stated by the 'experts'. We therefore have to fall back on the final line of defence – "Well I don't know anything about art but I know what I like."(Paraphrased from A History of Art; by HW Janson). This last sentence is the point Marion wanted to make. In every gallery, museum or at any Art Show, there is at least one artwork that she likes. Often she does not know why she likes that particular work, she just does!
An animated video, which attempted to explain just what art is, was shown.
Marion's final message was to encourage all of us to help make this upcoming 5th Art Show a success, by inviting family, neighbours and friends to come along and be surprised at the wonderful works of art, perhaps there will be a special one that you will; just like' and there is room on your wall for it.

Please note it is essential that apologies be recorded by 12noon on Mondays.
Also the Club has to pay for members who have not apologized and not turned up!  Phone number is 0457 315 900. Thank You.

Raffle books for the Art show are to be returned by the end of August please.
