Guest Speaker: Snr Sgt Angelo Ferra, Station Manager, at the Bellarine Police Station.
"Changes in Policing over the last 35 years."
Angelo lives in Point Lonsdale, has three children and three and a half grandchildren. The Policing organization has gone through many transformations. He has been in the job for 35 years and his talk proceeded to tell us about some of these changes. When he joined, the force was run like a military operation, with a parade each day, uniform was worn precisely and boots highly polished and the small amount of kit was impractical especially the rubber baton. The work was mainly reactionary, with the divvy van the main vehicle. Paperwork was cumbersome and because any questions and information was relayed through headquarters answers could take hours.
Today the uniform is more practical, batons are functional, personal protection gear is readily available and each officer carries spray and a handgun. Investigation of details is quick through the use of computers. Analysists are used and through their use of electronics, knowledge is quickly gathered and information is complete and available to task forces that attend the crime scene with a better appreciation of the event.
The Primary role of the force remains the same that of protection of life and property using knowledge gained through life experience, sharp observant eyes and the ability to recognize behavior that may not be usual. Community involvement has increased and is encouraged as are community organizations e.g. Neighbourhood watch, DHS, crime stoppers. Apprehension of traffic offenders and motor accidents has increased and numbers of serious offences has decreased.
Drugs are probably the most prevalent problem in the community for the next several years, and manpower required to control and restrain users and situations is increasing. Much work is being done in this area to manage this problem. Cyber crime and fraud is also increasing and requires specially trained personnel.
Local Challenges remain seasonal because of the resort nature of the area. Antisocial behavior, assault and theft remain the major problems, though crime over the Bellarine is much less than the Geelong area.
