Guest Speaker: Michael Nicholls. "Swimming the English Channel.
Michael has been a Podiatrist in Ocean Grove for 18 years. He was heavily involved in getting the swimming pool built in Ocean Grove. The first relay swim was in 1954.
Encouragement to swim the Channel came from Chloe McArdle who has swum the Channel three ways. The group called themselves 'Aussie Crawl'- English Channel Relay. Some members belong to the local Barracuda Swim Club. Preparation was quite involved, with swimming history taken into account as well as commitment to training, medical fitness, commitment to stay in Dover until the swim window opened, payment of fees, attendance at camps, night swimming, feeding regimes, participation in various races and open water swimming practice. Perhaps the biggest challenge was acclimatization to the water temperature.
The swim window was between 22/6 – 3/7/2015, on a Neap Tide. They commenced the swim at 3.57am. Clothing was regulated to bathers, goggles, cap and ear- plugs. Towels, warm and waterproof clothing, sleeping bag and medication. Food had to be easily digested and warm drinks were essential. Channel grease is not used in relays, as each leg was only one hour long. There were five members in the team. As the Channel is a very busy shipping lane they had to avoid big ships and their bow waves. The water temperature was 14.1 Centigrade and was reasonably clean. The team made landfall after 12 hours 22mins and 22seconds.
Celebrations were held in the pub, the "White Horse" where they managed to find a space to record their names along with multitude that have succeeded previously.
Well done Michael and the team…not my choice of enjoyment!
