Guest Speaker: John Wynn. "History of Ocean Grove"
John Wynn Presentation
John was initially hesitant to do this talk because of a dispute over indigenous vegetation and the celebration of 170 years of his family involvement in a caravan park.
Our township is unique as it was created through a private survey and gift from the Wesleyan Community and the co-operation of a group of estate agents.
The town is twinned with Ocean Grove in Neptune County, New Jersey, USA. This town has the same founder organization.
The Wutherrong Aboriginals were the fist inhabitants of the area.
In 1803 the British landed at Sullivan's Cove near Sorrento and landed 150 convicts, 200 settlers and 30 militia. William Buckley and two others escaped. Buckley travelled around the bay and joined the Aboriginals living with them for 35 years. When Batman came to Pt. Lonsdale he returned to white settlement and worked for the government.
He was killed in Tasmania.
William Bonzie was the first owner of the land before 1867 but this changed when the bank manager he was working with returned to England under less than desirable circumstances. An Evangelist set up a mission in Pt. Lonsdale in the 1880's, noting that the area seemed very similar to that in New Jersey. Photographic evidence from this era shows very little vegetation across the peninsular. The land was subdivided in 1887/88 with all blocks within the town boundary carrying a covenant re the manufacture and sale of liquor. Codes of behavior and dress were also according to Wesleyan rule.
The town was also known as Kingston on Sea. There was a Cobb and Co Coach service and many families holidayed here. Many buildings were grand but unfortunately the white ants prevailed over the weatherboard constructions. Funds were available to make and maintain roads and footpaths in the township until 1984. With the involvement of the Shire and construction of two areas of subdivision the fierce independence was slightly eroded. In the 1890s the Progress Association planted Marram Grass to stabilize the sand dunes, but unfortunately this assisted in the proliferation of rabbits and tea-tree from the Mornington Peninsular. The native Moonah was crowded out. People in Ocean Grove have always helped themselves – they built a public hall in 1826(destroyed by fire), a football ground, surf club, tennis courts etc. without the use of Government funds.
Immigration of refugees from post war Europe commenced in the 1940s and the Wynn family caravan park became a migrant hostel. These people have become very good citizens and contributed much to our community.
Unfortunately time ran out and this interesting talk was not fully completed.)
Thank you John.
