Guest Speaker: Bryan Humphries from RC of Geelong East.
His aim is to have clean water in Pursat Province in Cambodia.
Bryan has a varied career in Rotary over 24 years and after retiring from teaching he joined the Australian Volunteers International to Cambodia where he developed a passion to see these very poor and vulnerable people improve their lifestyle with basic needs. He hopes to have other clubs in this district contribute to this project to achieve his aim.
Bryan has worked in various areas in this very beautiful culturally rich country where the people are striving to rebuild the shattered almost non-existent upper and middle class so badly destroyed by the Phol Pot and Khmer Rouge regime in 1975. The incidence of family violence, Post Traumatic Stress and alcoholism is very high and this must be reduced if the predominantly rural dwellers are to recover.
His role in Cambodia is as a listening and development mentor to develop skills and knowledge. His aim is to do himself out of a job.
A practice run has been held where 6 wells were installed. 86 individuals, 156 children and 92 families have been supported. The children have been able to attend school and the locals have been taught and are capable of maintaining the mechanical pumps, practicing health and hygiene, and water testing.
The Global grant target is $AUD 56,000 which will be used to install more clean water wells, low tech water purification, rain water collection and the development of an enterprise where clean safe water can be sold.
Bryan wants 10 – 12 clubs to be involved and some donations are slowly coming in. The project will be inspected and monitored as it progresses.
CLEAN WATER WILL SAVE LIVES especially children who can attend school where apart from learning and gaining confidence in life hey are safer than working in the fields where landmines still exist!
Thank You,
AG
