 GUEST SPEAKER: Jill Moodie, Executive Director, Barwon Health Foundation and Volunteer Service.
PP Marg Campbell & Jill Moodie
Jill provided a history of the development of the Barwon Health Hospital in Geelong and the role of Community volunteers in fundraising. The Andrew Love Cancer Centre was named for Andrew Love the first Minister of any denomination in Geelong, who was responsible for the first hospital appeal an accident at the wharf led locals to start agitating for a hospital in the area. It started on the current site in 1849, however due to a shortage of labour caused by the gold rush, it did not open until 1852. Funds mainly came from Community efforts. It expanded in the 1880s in response to an increase in infectious diseases. The first Gala Parade was held in 1916 as a fundraiser for the Red Cross. Thus the 100-year anniversary parade will be held this year. At that time, they realised a new hospital building was needed. The Lord Kitchener Hospital Fund Raising campaign began with money coming partly from gambling revenue in partnership with the Geelong Racing Club. In 1927 another source of funds was found from Health Insurance partnerships with Unions and industry. The new hospital was built in 1931, mainly from community funding. It was renamed the Geelong Hospital in 1958.

The Baxter House Maternity Hospital was built on the land now occupied by Geelong Private in 1954, from a loan from the NAB. It was also realised that an Aged Care Home was needed in Geelong and a public appeal was raised. The McKellar sisters gifted their house on 41 acres I Bell Park, which became the Grace McKellar house, named for their mother. In 2005, a $1.25 bequest enabled the development of the current gardens.
The Barwon Health Foundation was established in 1998, and coordinates the community fundraising, which still has an essential role in financing new developments at the hospital. These include the new 'Cotton On' Children's Ward and Special Care Ward, which cost $7.8 million. Medical Research is a new initiative at the hospital. $800,000 was spent on new medical equipment last year.
The Andrew Love Centre redevelopment is the current major project. The key areas are the redevelopment of the Chemotherapy Day Ward and the relocation of the Oncology Pharmacy. The goal is to raise $3 million, of which half has already been achieved.

Rotary can be involved in Barwon Health projects by
·      Sponsoring a Rotary badged room, probably in conjunction with other clubs;
·      Funding a chair station, $10,000;
·      Helping with the general fundraising and or buying a piece of equipment from $500 to     $50,000

NEXT WEEK: Club Assembly meeting in Service Committees
(It is an opportunity to suggest new and ideas and ways in which we might improve our club even more to build on the good work of previous years)
13 September meeting was to be a joint meeting with Drysdale to welcome Tiffany. However, due to her late arrival this will be cancelled. Instead the meeting will be held as a Social/Fellowship gathering with no guest speaker.

Thank you, AH
