Guest Speakers: Greg Weeks and Alicia Neels. "Future Directions in Pharmacy."
Greg is the Director of Pharmacy at the Geelong University Hospital. This position encompasses the McKellar Center, St. John of God Hospital as well as the Geelong Hospital. There are 98 staff members, 98 of who are Pharmacists and 5 are students.
Pharmacists work mainly in the wards providing medication safety, counseling and education for staff, patients and families/carers. They are also involved in many Clinical trials and the preparation of sterile solutions for the Andrew Love Center. 20,000 items for cancer care is distributed across the district, extending to Colac. The Andrew Love Center drug preparation area is currently being upgraded through 'Project Love' to provide more space, increased safety, more counseling, better on-site preparation and more clinical trials.
Greg is involved in the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee, which considers costs, approval for trials and drug usage and resource allocations etc.
Practice research involves links with Monash, Public health research and campaigns e.g. smoking, Palliative care research, telehealth, supervision of Masters students, and involvement of Pharmacists in GP Practice, collaborative charting and oral chemotherapy.
The Geelong Pharmacy Department has recently introduced robotic into the areas of storage and retrieval.

Alicia has the responsibility of Antimicrobial Stewardship in Pharmacy, especially in the areas of Hepatitis C and use of Antibiotics. Alicia gave a brief description of Hepatitis C stressing the ease of infection and the complications that can occur if the body cannot clear the infection. This is a chronic disease with 4,000 suffers in the Geelong region. Cirrhosis of the liver is the main complication. Sources of infection include IV drug use, tattooing and body piercing, open wounds and non-sterile procedures and equipment.
Treatment is usually over 8 – 12 weeks with antiviral drugs. This is the area that is most exciting as modern therapy involves fewer side effects, is more efficient and can be administered orally once per day. The medication, which is expensive, is covered through the PBS scheme. The aim is to eliminate this disease in 10 years.
Antibiotic stewardship involves education of staff, patients and family/carers in the use of antibiotics. This includes use only when necessary, completion of the course of drugs and use of specific drugs for specific infection. The aim of this care is to reduce the prevalence of MRSA, the superbug infection that is becoming more prevalent in health care areas and is extremely serious and difficult to treat.

The Four Way Test:                    2016-2017 Theme: Rotary Serving Humanity

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
