Guest Speaker: Vicki Funnell, "Operation Cleft Palate."
"Gift a Smile for Life," is the title of a confronting video which showed the before and after results of the surgery and care to the affected children.
The organization was started in 2005 by as a project of the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central in conjunction with the Glencoe Foundation, and provides free cleft lip and cleft palate repair surgery for underprivileged children in Bangladesh. The organization is also connected with Interplast and is an ancillary partner of Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS).
There are over 200,000 people living with an untreated cleft lip and or palate in the country. More than 5,000 are born with the condition each year. The condition results in difficulty in feeding often leading to malnutrition and reduced immune system. Social isolation, depression both of the children and their families often occurs. Many do not attend school.
Each corrective surgical procedure costs $300.00 and highly qualified medical staff including speech therapists if needed gives specialist care. Eleven thousand operations have been performed since 2005 and more children are being treated early. Results are more satisfactory as the child can gain an education and live a near normal life. It is hoped the 750-1000 operations will be performed this year.
Vicki stressed that donors are the lifeblood of the project and asked for our support. The funds raised supplement those raised by a dedicated supporters in Bangladesh.
This is no doubt a life transforming activity for these children and their families who could not have a life of opportunity and normalcy. In Australia the condition, which is a congenital abnormality, is treated early, as a matter of course.

Thank you.
AG.

Note from President Elect John Calnin:
"This years Summer Market has been completed thanks to the Chamberlain's and their helpers. This is a major fundraising project for our club and we need someone to 'step up' and take the coordinator's role as 'Coogs" is required to start planning for the PE role. It would be a great pity if the market fell over because of the lack of a coordinator. There is a huge amount of support for someone who might take this role. It is very important to have this position finalized soon. PLEASE give this some thought and take up the challenge.
