Guest Speakers: Adam Lloyd and
Steve Gibbs.
Adam Lloyd is the Group
Sustainability Manager for ‘Cotton On.’ Steve is involved in Work Place Safety.
Adam has worked in the supply
chain of various organizations and whilst they’re realized there was an ethical
method of obtaining supply and became convinced that all aspects of an
organization could be conducted in an ethical manner. This included producers;
workers in factories and the material they worked with were treated and sourced
by ethical means.
‘Cotton On’ that was commenced
in Geelong is 25 years old.
It is found in 19 countries,
has 19,000 employees 1300 of who work in Geelong.
Adam believes that his most
important responsibility is to ensure the company is ‘doing the right thing,’
socially, environmentally and financially.
Fourteen Rules are given to overseas
manufacturers and factory audits are carried out in Bangladesh, China and
India.
Cotton is the main material
used as it can be traced through the supply chain allowing careful analysis of
how the material is grown, sourced or produced. The process is open to public
scrutiny. It has been realized that waterways must be cared for to ensure they
are sustainable. The aim is to have sustainable cotton by 2021.
Cotton On has teamed with
various NGOs especially in Asia and Africa, as the 800 – 1200 farmers of raw
material are subsistence farmers. The outcome of this co-operation is having
some very positive results in the communities.
It is not always easy to
maintain ethical standards but by working with managers and owners who supply
all aspects of the supply of material and product much can and has been
achieved. Living conditions are improving and many workers and their families
are receiving some education. Unfortunately, there remains some difficulty with
ideas of a fair wage and women’s rights.
Thank you, AG
