Guest Speakers: 11 Students completing Grade 6 from the three Primary Schools in Ocean Grove who represented 40 of their classmates who participated in the Rotary Junior Community Awards, (graham Barth Awards). This program was commenced in Bairnsdale 19 years ago. The purpose of the program is to challenge young people physically, culturally and in community service and thus assist in developing their Community awareness. The project requires persistence to complete at least 40 hours over 10 weeks. The support of their teachers as well as the whole family is vital.
The activities in which the students were involved included: Opportunity shop work where some of the difficulties experienced by people became known, dog walking, cooking, painting in the community, the Anzac March, Netball coaching, photography, CFA volunteering, dancing, attendance at a community meeting, Hindu and Buddhist religions, Bangarra Art Festival, cultural exchange with indigenous people at Uluru and relatives from Sweden, football and soccer, touch typing, musical performance, gym, Guitar lessons, visiting and helping Elderly Citizens, ballet, and theatre.
Most students enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot about their community. They were pleased to have had the opportunity to participate as they felt their confidence and sense of achievement was increased.
Geoff Chandler, Tony Haines and Judy Greer were thanked for their encouragement and assistance.
Many members have stated that this program is one of the most satisfying projects we participate in as the variety and diversity of experiences undertaken never ceases to amaze us.

Thank you, AG
