July 5th.  What happened!
President
New President Marg Campbell welcomed everyone to a working meeting to start the year.  We wish Marg well in her new role and of course we all pledge our total support and undivided attention in all matters!!!
  • Marg outlined some updates on our members and families who are experiencing some health challenges.  The Club extends their thoughts and best wishes to Peter and Annette Cullen, and also to Alison George.
  • Members Comments from last meeting.  The concern expressed over meeting 'no shows' and being charged will be taken up with a meeting with Club Grove.  It has already been raised as a concern from us.
  • Weekly wine raffle.  Each week a member will be rostered on to conduct the raffle.  Their duty will be to organize the sale of tickets and supervise the draw.  Weekly prizes will be provided by the President (from club funds).  The 'tub' of tickets will be held in the store cupboard of the meeting room at Club Grove. After the raffle, please return the 'tub' to the cupboard ready for next week. (It all sounds quite simple really!)
This week's prize included a family pass to the Marine Discovery Centre as well as the 'usual' red and white….
Reports and stuff.
  • Constitution.  Our guru in this matter, Tony Haines, reported that there had been some feedback with suggestions for change of a minor nature.  He will have the preliminary document amended and then it will be presented at a special meeting for ratifying.  (If you don't like it then you need to act now.  Don't leave it to the special meeting.) Tony is of immeasurable value to the Club in this area and we are very grateful for his good work.
  • Conference 2013.  Our Conference Chairperson, Gary Golding reported that the Fort at Queenscliff is not going to be available as a venue.  The alternative venue, Suma Park, is however, looking very good and should be a terrific site. The theme is in hand and should be announced soon.  A conference c'tee meeting is to be held this Thursday night, July 7th.
  • Winter Market.  Our first market in the Surfside Stadium was a success.  Most stallholders have booked again.  There were over 70 stalls occupied with $1,900 being raised for the Ambulance from donation admissions and some early sales of Art Show raffle tickets netted $300.  Thanks to all who participated, especially to Geoffrey Cummings and his team (and the stoic car parkers, who braved the treacherous elements!)
  • Car Raffle.  This is too good to let go.  So Gary Golding has volunteered to lead a team with Geoff Ford acting as mentor.  Noel Emselle and Bill Walton have agreed to help. There is need for a couple more.  So go to it and get on to one the best fund raising committees our Club has got!  Some interesting raffle statistics.  Since 2004, $94,000 has come to the Club. Last year alone there were over 170 selling sessions.
  • Frogs meeting. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday July 6th.  Guest speaker will be the project manager for the Barwon Heads Bridge.
  • Bear adoption Program.  Another new initiative.  This one is being lead by Coral Barker, who along with help from Marion Walton and Heather Wallace, is going to prepare teddy bears for sale at markets and elsewhere.  These bears will be numbered and have a brief Rotary message with contact details and the year's theme pin.
Guest Speaker
Gordon King gave us a succinct account of his background from his childhood in
'Dame Edna Everidge country' (Moonee Ponds), to Sydney, around the world, and finally to settle in Ocean Grove.
Gordon has had a working life of architecture after training at RMIT and Melbourne University. Specialising in project managing (with a security emphasis), Gordon became involved in designing and building Embassies in 14 countries around the world, including Paris, Bejing, Washington, Lagos, Accra, Brasillia, Tokyo, New Delhi. Back home he was responsible for the oversight of the Papua New Guinea  embassy in Canberra.
Into private enterprise Gordon's expertise found himself project managing the building of Clubs in NSW where he has just sold his consultancy and retired to OG.
Gordon and Marion have now settled in the good country and look forward to pursuing hobbies of sailing, bushwalking and looking after(?) 4 sons and 5 grandchildren!  No doubt he will do a LOT of Rotary work having transferred from his NSW Club of St Ives.
Welcome to Gordon and Marion.
A thought: Be the change you wish to see in the world! (loosely attributed to Ghandi and our President Marg.)
New Editor – (very temporary).  With Alison being incapacitated for a few weeks, the job, by default, has fallen to me.  I will follow in the footsteps of the great editors who preceded me and do my best.  With any sort of luck Alison will see the disaster and recover quickly!  There will be no prizes for finding spelling errors or grammatical inaccuracies.  I will get upset very quickly!
